Choose a surface for how the area is used

A tile that works indoors is not automatically appropriate beside a pool. Discuss the supplier’s intended application, surface texture and maintenance requirements before purchasing. Consider barefoot use, sun exposure and how the new surface will meet doors, garden paths and adjoining paving. We can review a sample with you; photographs alone cannot establish the feel or suitability of a tile underfoot.

Understand the support and water flow

Existing cracks, settlement and areas of standing water need attention before a new finish is laid. We inspect what can be seen and explain where removal may be needed to assess concealed construction. Around your Sydney pool, record where water collects after washing or rain. Tiling over a problem without resolving the supporting surface may simply reproduce it in the new work.

Set out coping, edges and movement junctions

The pool edge, changes in level and intersections with structures influence the layout. Cuts should be considered before installation, especially around curved sections or narrow borders. Required movement junctions must remain functional rather than being filled as ordinary grout joints. If coping or drainage components are being replaced by another contractor, we agree the sequence and responsibilities before the tiling stage is booked.

Protect the pool during the work

Preparation and cutting can introduce dust and debris, so protection and waste handling need to be included in the scope. Plan care for the completed surround

Outdoor tiles still need regular cleaning, particularly where leaves, soil and sunscreen residue accumulate. Use the tile and grout supplier’s care guidance and avoid assuming that a rough texture tolerates every chemical or pressure setting. Sealing does not correct drainage or replace a suitable poolside surface.
